Sheena Scipio’s journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and dedication. As the founder of Kayawen – Everything Indigenous, she has built a thriving business that celebrates and preserves the rich traditions of Guyana’s indigenous communities.

Originally from Moco Moco Village in Region 9, Sheena, now 33, resides in Georgetown, where she launched Kayawen on August 27th, 2020. Her offerings include beaded jewelry, seed jewelry, feather jewelry, cassava cassareep, crab oil, and chikitai (dried pepper) — each product a reflection of her heritage and craftsmanship.

What began as a heartfelt pursuit of cultural expression has grown into a symbol of self-reliance and determination. Sheena started her business with a personal loan, which she successfully repaid, demonstrating remarkable financial resilience. Sourcing materials and supporting local agricultural production presented challenges, but her unwavering commitment turned these obstacles into opportunities.

Beyond her business, Sheena is a catalyst for community empowerment. By collaborating with indigenous artisans and producers, she promotes economic growth while ensuring cultural practices endure. Her vision for a physical storefront marks an exciting next chapter, expanding her reach and creating further opportunities for others.

Sheena’s story serves as an inspiration, particularly for young entrepreneurs facing similar challenges. Her success highlights the transformative power of local enterprise, providing employment, fostering cultural pride, and igniting hope within her community.

“From our local factories, farmers, and manufacturers to @guyana.shop — talent and resources from our backyard.”

Through her advocacy for locally produced goods, Sheena reminds us that every purchase is an investment in our shared heritage and future.
