Curleees is such a personal project for me because it is my gift to my younger self. When I was a little girl the glamorized dolls and TV stars didn’t have my hair, skin or features. So instead of learning to embrace and nurture my curls, I wanted to change them. But in 2010 my Miss Universe pageant experience changed me by opening my eyes to a global beauty culture that was so pervasive and tragically lacking in representation of minorities.
I decided to start my journey back to loving who I am naturally. Curl Fete was born, and with thousands of supporters, it is now the largest movement in the Caribbean that celebrates natural hair and beauty, testament to how important this mission is.
