The W.O.B.Y. Initiative comes as, fueled by mega oil discoveries and production, Guyana takes its place as one of the world’s fastest growing economies. It recognizes that, in a country with a population of less than one million, women and girls increasingly will be required to assume leadership and management roles in both traditional and emerging industrial sectors as the economy expands. Globally, the initiative coincides with, and fully supports, the United Nation’s recognition of women and girls as “agents of change for sustainable development.”
