For as long as I could remember I have always gotten a sense of fulfillment from collaborating with others to make their dreams a reality, it has been as fulfilling as seeing my own dreams or ideas manifest. Being an Events coordinator and decorator allows me the opportunity to work along with my clients to build a plan of execution then see it through to the end.
One of the most rewarding parts of my work is being able to do it with family, our company Luthers Decorators International founded by my older brother Lionel about 18 years ago in Trinidad is now operated and managed here in our homeland Guyana by me and in the United states by my brother Micah. Working with them has mostly been a joy, and a great pleasure for the last five plus years.
As a family rooted in strong moral values, we’ve preserved our name and continue to strive to ensure that our brand is synonymous with excellence and integrity in the market. We see ourselves as leaders in management and innovation, ever evolving in productions that transform and transcend. Our mission is to make our customers vision a reality, and to always provide a service that is reliable and satisfactory.
In many ways I stumbled into entrepreneurship, and like many young people I struggled earlier on to find a sense of purpose and direction, never really fitting in anywhere. I realized that being an entrepreneur allows you to be original. It pulls out the best in you and places a demand on you to be exceptional continually. It requires dedication, discipline and good old fashion hard work.
I’ve learnt that entrepreneurship allows us to do what all men were created to do, that is to create, and I am of the opinion that the greatest fulfillment in life comes from doing that. Whether it is building a chair, researching the cure for cancer, structuring systems that will increase efficiency and effectiveness in our public sectors or decorating a hall, I am convinced that creativity fuels our purpose in life.
Being an events coordinator has allowed me to fulfil that desire to create, someone once said life is a series of events. It is a great honor for me to be a part of planning events that create moments that will be forever etched in someone’s memory. Whether it is a groom seeing the love of his life walking down an aisle where all the elements are set to spark magic or setting the stage for a young graduate to receive his reward for sleepless night. We get to be a part of making those moments unforgettable at all natures of events, and we love it!
As a Guyanese woman and I say this shyly because on most days I feel like I have so much more growing to do, and I do. I’m pleasantly surprised, inspired and empowered by the resilient young people who rise above and do amazing things and by the many Guyanese who’ve made a mark all over the world and right here at home. It reminds me that I am, that I can and that I must.
How did you arrive at the idea for your business?
The business I operate in partnership with my brothers is an extension of the company Luthers Decorators Ltd. which was founded 10 years prior by my brother in Trinidad. As Guyanese we contemplated if there was a market for decorators in our homeland and if there was a clientele for high end designs and productions. As we embarked on that journey we recognized that there was a dire need for events coordination as well, and while the skillset is yet to be appreciated we’ve had the opportunity to provide these services to the Guyanese public. I was tasked with responsibility of heading the operations here in Guyana and working alongside my brothers to structure and develop what has now become a budding business.
What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?
Honestly it was knowing what I did not want to do that lead me in this direction, I’ve never been a fan of monotony so I was certain that I could not possibly survive an office job or a job that did not challenge my creativity and skill.
What is your greatest challenge being an entrepreneur?
My greatest challenge has been communicating and networking, by nature I am not the most forth right or outgoing person. Facing my fears has allowed me to overcome them.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
The most satisfying moment is always knowing that the customer is pleased, I have had quite a few of these moments it never gets old. It is the greatest reward after hard work.
What piece of advice would you give to other young people who want to become entrepreneurs?
I would tell them that life is a compilation of seasons, and in each season there is a process. Be prepared for the process, know your end goal but don’t be so fixated on achieving that you miss savoring all the moments that make up the season. Always give the best of yourself. Never consider giving up, when one way doesn’t work try another. Environment matters, there are certain conditions that are necessary for a seed to grow and finally you may know somethings but their I so much you do not know find a mentor/s to remind you and to guide you.
How do you define success?
Success for me is fulfilling purpose and empowering others to do the same.
Who has been your greatest inspiration?
My greatest inspiration has been my big brother Lionel, he has been a mentor, a friend and a hell of a big brother. He started from scratch and with hard work and dedication in spite of the odds he has achieved great success. He remains humble and continues to climb, his strength and consistency inspires me to stay focused and to keep going.
